How About You Pay Attention!

A visual essay about how technology distracts us from paying attention in class

This visual essay was extremely exciting to do! My group and I came up with this idea pretty quickly because we knew what we wanted to do. We chose our topic from Howard Rheingold’s 5 21st century literacies and our topic centered around attention. When my group and I chose this topic, we got to work immediately. My job was to think about how we could take good pictures to tell a story and to edit a few of the pictures to help enhance the story. I used different editing techniques such as the blur tool, the marquee tool, and the brush tool. After using the marquee tool, I put text inside the figures I made to help bring the story to fruition. After we finished editing, we put the pictures we took in order of how technology can take your attention away from you.

The visual essay taught me to articulate a story without having to use words to get the message across. It also taught me how to put things together to catch the viewer’s eye. I think this was really good in teaching me how to group pictures together to create a story.

I can use what I learned to add more value to my resume. By doing this project, I can honestly say that I am proficient in Adobe Photoshop and that I have some graphic design skills.
