Yo, what did he just say?

Can you believe what Mike Leach, the Mississippi State Football Head Coach, just said? He tweeted the most outrageous thing for him to say during the time of a pandemic, when everybody is home and can actually pay attention to what is said online. Well without more delay, this is what Mike Leach said:

Mike Leach would later apologize for saying this but he should know that you can not post something like this in a state where lynchings were common. That was very reckless and irresponsible. I see the angle he was trying to take about quarantine making his wife annoyed with him to the point of wanting to kill him and it being a joke but it is insensitive to say that when a noose is associated with the hanging of black people.

Mike Leach is not the first person to do something like this. The NFL team, Washington Redskins, is also a loaded name for a team. Native Americans find offense to that name. Matter of fact according to Tim Marcin, the owner of the Redskins is known for being a racist and he chose to name the team the Redskins. This is getting out of hand in the sports world of owners and coaches just saying racist things and getting away it. Of course we also can’t forget Colin Kaepernick’s exile from the NFL because of him wanting to take a knee for awarness of inequality still in the African American community.

According to The Real News podcast by Marc Steiner, the NFL is still segregated between the majority black players on the field and the majority white people in the office and those who get to sit in the owner’s box. There has to be a change in the way things are done in the NFL.

When we look at the NBA, there is not a big problem of underlying racism in the league. Players can communicate with their coaches and owners and no one is put into an exile for simply choosing to take a knee during the National Anthem. The NFL has to do better with handling the racial tension and so does college football.

As a college football player, I know there are racial things that happen behind the scenes of my sport. Football is just a sport where that naturally happens at the moment. There has to be a change in this sport that holds most of America’s attention.
