Bring me my money

There needs to be impactful, dynamic bylaw change within the association. Student athletes deserve better compensation, in whatever form it may hold.

— Magdalena Mihaylova

I have something to say and I do not know if you’re ready for it. Can you handle it? Well here it goes anyway. I should really get paid for doing this. What is this you ask? Let me clarify. I should be compensated for playing collegiate sports. I dedicate myself to my respective sport and bring in billions of dollars annually for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Millions of people come to watch us play or watch on their TVs. We add another layer of entertainment for various types of people, yet it does not show. Many entertainers get paid on all types of levels except college athletes like myself. I believe this should change and that Furman University should lead this change. Furman should pay me to entertain the school because I need the money to prevent my parents from sending me their hard earned money. I don’t want to make it any harder on my parents because I need money. As a football player in a prestigeous university, it would help me out greatly to be compensated for the things that I do everyday.

I engage in athletics 15+ hours throughout the week. From the time I get up for workouts to the time I finish practice. This a lot asking a student to dedicate so much time to one thing and then telling them to keep their grades up. I can remember trying to study my tail off to get a decent grade in a class so I can be eligible for next season. That is unfair and it needs to be changed. It feels like modern slavery to do all of these things and not get any real compensation for it.

Video by Alex Bailey

The video above demonstrates the time that I spend on my workouts. It may be free here to workout but it is not free when I go home. The NCAA could at least make sure I have enough money to pay someone to train me to keep me at optimal performance.

Not everyone goes pro and not every college football player gets to seize opportunites for a future outside of football. For someone like myself, who has put their body through hell and does not want to pursue a professional playing career, I should be compensated for my time being in the NCAA. I had a fractured wrist and it was hard for me to play on it and it would’ve made me feel better knowing money was coming my way to relieve me of knowing I was hurt.

So in other words “Tell them to bring me my money”

The rules and the social problems of being an athlete are very important to me and it will be something that will be adressed in my blogs.

What’s next?

Broadcasting is a powerful way of telling stories. You can control the story and tell the story how you see fit. The power to praise or destroy a person. Quite powerful honestly. I learned a lot of lessons in this class. I learned that I may be good at one thing but I have to be better at everything else. So what have I learned you may ask? Well, do I have something for you!

  1. I learned how to become a better editor. Basically I learned how to know what to include in my stories and what not. Many people that I interviewed repeated themselves over and over in there statements and I learned how to take the most important sound bite from them.
  2. I learned how to write a script. The script writing is important because it tells the story of what the reporter is trying to portray to a viewer.
  3. I learned the importance of shooting people away from walls and windows. Walls make the video banal and not as amusing to look at and windows can darken out a subject and make them hard to see.

I think I have grown as a storyteller by me being able to know what makes a good story. To dig deeper and find those emotional and connecting stories that people would want to see. It took me awhile to figure it out but it was worth it in the long run. Another thing that made me a better storyteller was watching how other people got creative when telling their stories. I think this helped me gain another perspective on how to make a compelling story.

Broadcasting has also enhance what I already felt towards it. I love the feeling of getting to know people and tell their stories. I think that is extremely powerful and noteworthy to do. I have a greater appreciation on figuring out the story and how to tell it in the most exciting way. There is definitely a bigger respect toward all the little things like editing, setting up the interview, creating the right questions, and being sociable. I think that’s super important components of being in broadcast.

What I learned this semester will take me a long way. I learned how to think outside the box and create different experiences that could be more enjoyable and valued by viewers. I plan to grow as a video content creator so that my level of shooting and portraying better visuals of the story are seen as something outstanding. I know I have a long way to go but the journey will be worth it one day.

You Can’t Use That

What can we use and what can’t we use? Well that’s a complicated question that many people should know the answer to. Unfortunately, for everyone, I only know of the Fair Use Doctrine and the recording laws of GA and SC. The Fair Use Doctrine is used for four things:

  1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
  2. The nature of the copyrighted work
  3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
  4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work

Pretty simple rules if I say so myself. The tricky thing resides in the recording laws. In SC, the recording law is “it is a criminal offense to use any device to record or share use communications, whether they are wire, oral or electronic, without the consent of at least one person taking part in the communication” (South Carolina Recording Laws). This law could affect my storytelling by some people not wanting to be on the record or give their accounts on something. It could potentially weaken the story. There have been times I needed to record a professor giving a lecture so I can go back and listen to what he’s saying but I didn’t get the consent from him to record so I didn’t record him.

GA has a very similar law, however, if it is a phone call you are allowed to record the conversation because you are a part of the conversation. There is also a law about using hidden camera devices to record people. You can’t do that without consent. GA recording laws also say you can record court hearings and public meetings. An example I can think of me using this law at home was recording the BLM protest during the Summer. These laws would affect my stories by not being able to catch certain things I would have caught if the camera wasn’t rolling and by being able to record public gatherings or court hearings, it’ll add more depth to whatever story I am looking to tell.

I could use the laws in GA to my advantage by making phone calls if I need to get big information. That way I still have my source’s voice and a first hand account of what’s going on. In SC I probably wouldn’t benefit much because I would be stuck asking people for permission often.

What are you willing to do to be great?

Me in a turtle neck

Goals drive a successful human being every day. How do we use our goals to become great? Well, the answer relies with you and your goals. Now most people reading this may say “It’s not that simple”. This is not true because it is that simple. We can be great as we want to be if we strive to complete our goals. I, myself, have a long-tern goal to be the best sports broadcaster to ever do it. In order to do that, I have to continue to grow by working on the short-term goals needed to elevate me towards greatness.

What can I do better?

After watching some of the videos I have done in broadcasting, I realized I still have a long way to go. In order to get there I have to continue to get better at being creative with the story I want to portray, and becoming a better editor. I have to tell the story better by going to other sources that can give what I’m reporting about more of a truth. In some of my videos, I only used a primary source for my packages. In my Devin Wynn package. I should have interviewed his position coach or the head coach of the football team to further the angle of what brought Devin here to Furman. Also in the package the sound wasn’t as good as it could be.

The skills I picked up

With the things I know I have to get better at, there are also some skills I have learned along the way. I have learned how to make graphics of athletes and their stats like this:

I also have made a graphic on upcoming games:

I have also gotten better at speaking on camera. I think that has definitely been my favorite skill that I have begun to refine.

What new style have I developed?

Well, I think my style is centered around sports because I feel like I can tell a great story with athletes due to me being one and that I understand what it is like to be one. I think that the things I have learned so far like stand ups can be incorporated in my future packages and in my career. I also feel that editing videos will also benefit me down the line.

What are my goals that will propel me to greatness?

  1. Become a better editor. In order to become a better editor I have to be open to learn more about the process. I have to learn how to take out background noise in my videos, make my scenes pop out more visually, and maybe add a little music in the background to create a next level product.

2. Make creative content. The things I film have to be more creative. I have seen multiple reels on Twitter of different people trying to get into the sports broadcast world like myself and I have to make content that exceeds theirs. In order to do that I have to start thinking outside of the box on my packages and my anchoring. That can include stand-ups or writing better lines

3. Writing. One thing I think will further my ability to tell stories and anchor is my writing. I think I have improved some in that aspect since I started broadcasting but I still have a long way to go and I look forward to doing that. Better writing will lead me to more compelling stories.

4. Shooting. I have to do a better job shooting different people to illustrate the story I want to tell. When I am covering a player, I need to get a teammate or a coach to go with the package. It’ll add more depth to my story so it won’t feel bland or weak. I also need to shoot live B-roll when I can. I think live B-roll will make the story better instead of me getting from another source.

5. Learn every thing. This is a really important goal for me because it will add more value to myself. I have to learn things that would make myself a complete one man band. Learn new editing skills, new writing skills, new anchoring skills, and new reporting skills. I also need to learn about more shooting techniques to create distinctive content. There is so much to learn, I just have to make sure I take every opportunity to learn a new skill when it is presented to me.

Aye! We Closed

In this video that I made, I talk about how the Corona Virus has affected people being able to go workout. I talk about how, fortunately, I have access to a gym and the new things I have started to do to stay fit. I also talk with my teammate via zoom to talk about how the Corona Virus may have or have not limited him to train for the NFL. In making this video, I learned how to edit my own videos. I learned a lot about how to put videos in certain places to get them to flow good. I will use my learning to further my own agenda in the broadcasting world to make myself more distinct in the job market.

Yo, what did he just say?

Can you believe what Mike Leach, the Mississippi State Football Head Coach, just said? He tweeted the most outrageous thing for him to say during the time of a pandemic, when everybody is home and can actually pay attention to what is said online. Well without more delay, this is what Mike Leach said:

Mike Leach tweet from twitter from BSO

Mike Leach would later apologize for saying this but he should know that you can not post something like this in a state where lynchings were common. That was very reckless and irresponsible. I see the angle he was trying to take about quarantine making his wife annoyed with him to the point of wanting to kill him and it being a joke but it is insensitive to say that when a noose is associated with the hanging of black people.

Tweet captured from Mike Leach’s Twitter via my phone

Mike Leach is not the first person to do something like this. The NFL team, Washington Redskins, is also a loaded name for a team. Native Americans find offense to that name. Matter of fact according to Tim Marcin, the owner of the Redskins is known for being a racist and he chose to name the team the Redskins. This is getting out of hand in the sports world of owners and coaches just saying racist things and getting away it. Of course we also can’t forget Colin Kaepernick’s exile from the NFL because of him wanting to take a knee for awarness of inequality still in the African American community.

According to The Real News podcast by Marc Steiner, the NFL is still segregated between the majority black players on the field and the majority white people in the office and those who get to sit in the owner’s box. There has to be a change in the way things are done in the NFL.

When we look at the NBA, there is not a big problem of underlying racism in the league. Players can communicate with their coaches and owners and no one is put into an exile for simply choosing to take a knee during the National Anthem. The NFL has to do better with handling the racial tension and so does college football.

As a college football player, I know there are racial things that happen behind the scenes of my sport. Football is just a sport where that naturally happens at the moment. There has to be a change in this sport that holds most of America’s attention.

What does it look like to play your sport?

In today’s assignment, my group and I worked on Rheingold’s literacy principal known as participation. In doing this, we looked at lacrosse and golf and compared the difference of participation between the two sports. Golf is mainly a single player game that focuses on the talent of a single individual. Lacrosse on the the other hand is a game played by at least 11 players on the field. the level of participation in these sports are different and we we discuss it in the podcast.

In doing this assignment, I learned how to record a podcast and edit one. I also learned about two sports that are different than mine. It opened up my eyes to things that I did not really think about before recording this podcast. I felt like I gained a surplus of information of something outside of football and I think it will make be a better sports anchor/broadcaster in my future. Also learning how to do podcasts and edit them has made me more of a media enthusiast.

Now I can use the knowledge that I have on this subject and apply it to my resume to increase my value in the communications market. I also feel as if my new found knowledge on making podcast puts me one step closer to achieving my dream job.

Teamwork? TEAMWORK!!!

All Dins Sports Podcast

In today’s blog, my team and I did a podcast that talks about one of Howard Rheingold’s literacies: Participation. Participation is an important aspect because in order for us to excel in the media field we must be active participants. This podcast really brought out what participation is and I really enjoyed doing it with my group. It wasn’t really tough to do because everything felt natural in my opinion. We chatted for close to about seven minutes and it was by far the most entertaining experience I have had all year.  This was a great way to enjoy talking with friends and learning more about them. Sounds weird saying that but it actually makes a whole lot of sense. We planned out what we wanted to talk about and we did not want to script anything so the experience would be completely authentic.

In making this podcast, I learned how to be authentic in the content that I get to create. I found it fun to manipulate the sound clips we used to make our podcast sound good and look good. We made sure everyone in the group was loose and could talk all day about the topic at hand. Had we planned out what we wanted to say, I think it would not have been authentic. We also had to do our job of getting sound clips from my group members respective sports.

I can apply my learning from this podcast to any future podcasts that I may want to do one day. I learned that being authentic is what truly matters when you are doing something like making a podcast. You want the listener to feel as if they are truly understanding what you are saying.  I think knowing how to edit and make podcasts will help my market value go up and it will make me more valuable to future employers.
